Florida gets hit by hurricanes more than any place in the United States, but category 4 landfalls in Big Bend are rare. They are so rare it hasn't happened since the mid 1800s. But that will change tonight when Helene makes landfall within the hour. The devastation will be sobering tomorrow morning when the sun comes up. Lives will be lost. Some can't or won't evacuate. It's tough to even think about what those will endure tonight on the Florida Gulf Coast.
I experienced these nights while tracking major hurricanes in Louisiana during the 2020 season. I was lucky enough to survive, others won't be so lucky tonight and in the time to come as the flooding ramps up all the way to NC where it's expected to be the worst they have ever seen due to the recent rainfall and incoming storm.
Godspeed to all in the path. Aid will be needed across the globe to help those impacted the next few days. There aren't any natural disasters much worse than a major hurricane.
